The Boston Terrier: Massachusetts' Own Breed

The Boston Terrier is one of the few dog breeds developed in the United States, and it started right here. The breed was developed in Boston in the late 1800s, was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893, and was named the official state dog of Massachusetts in 1979. Its tuxedo markings and gentle, clownish personality earned it the nickname "the American Gentleman".

Today Bostons come in the classic black and white and brindle, as well as blue, lilac and brown. See our Boston Terrier colors guide.
