How to Find a Reputable Boston Terrier Breeder
Finding a reputable Boston Terrier breeder is the most important step in getting a healthy, well-adjusted puppy, and the best protection against puppy scams. Here's what a good breeder does, the questions to ask, and the red flags that should make you walk away.
Signs of a Reputable Boston Terrier Breeder
- Lets you visit, or at least see the puppy live on video, before you pay anything.
- Shows you the parents, so you can judge adult size, looks and temperament.
- Provides health records for the puppy and answers honestly about breed health issues.
- Puts terms in writing: price, deposit, refunds and what happens if a health problem appears.
- Raises puppies in a home, with people, noise and handling, not isolated in a kennel.
- Asks you questions too, because a good breeder cares where their puppies go.
- Doesn't rush you or pressure you to pay today.
- Has a real, verifiable location and a consistent name across their website and listings.
Questions to Ask a Boston Terrier Breeder
- Can I visit and meet the puppy and the parents?
- How old is the puppy, and when can they go home?
- What veterinary and vaccination records come with the puppy?
- Have the parents had any health testing, such as eye, hearing or knee checks?
- How are the puppies raised and socialized?
- What is the deposit, and is it refundable?
- What happens if my vet finds a health problem?
- Are the puppies spayed or neutered?
Red Flags and Puppy Scams to Avoid
Online puppy scams are common, and the FTC and the Better Business Bureau both warn about them. Be cautious if a seller:
- refuses a visit or live video call
- asks for payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency only
- offers a price far below other breeders (for example, "under $300")
- uses photos that show up elsewhere online (try a reverse image search)
- adds surprise fees for "shipping crates", "insurance" or "vaccines" after you pay
- won't give a real location, or pushes you to decide immediately

Breeder, Rescue or Adoption?
We're a breeder rehoming our own puppies for an adoption fee. Boston Terrier rescues are non-profit groups that rehome dogs in need, often adults. Both are great ways to bring a Boston home. If rescue is right for you, look for an established non-profit Boston Terrier rescue near you. If you'd like a puppy from us, read how adoption works.
Choosing a Breeder FAQ
How do I know if a Boston Terrier breeder is legit?
A legitimate breeder lets you visit or see the puppy live, shows you the parents, provides health records, puts deposit and refund terms in writing, and never asks for gift cards or untraceable payments.
Should I pay a deposit for a puppy?
Deposits are normal once you've seen the puppy and have the terms in writing. Ours is 40% of the adoption fee and refundable within 72 hours of payment.
How old should a puppy be before going home?
At least 8 weeks. Puppies learn important social skills from their mother and littermates, and many states legally require a minimum age before sale.
