Boston Terrier Puppy Care: Your First Year Together
Bringing home a Boston Terrier puppy is exciting, and a little overwhelming. This Boston Terrier puppy care guide walks you through the first year: what to buy before day one, how to house train and crate train, socializing, vaccines, and the milestones to expect from 8 weeks to 12 months.
Before Your Puppy Comes Home: Checklist
- Crate sized for an adult Boston, with a divider for now.
- Soft bed and a washable blanket.
- Harness and leash. Choose a harness that doesn't press on the throat, to protect their airway.
- The same food your puppy is eating now, plus shallow bowls. See our Boston Terrier food guide.
- Chew toys for teething.
- Enzyme cleaner for accidents, which removes the scent that draws puppies back to the same spot.
- A vet appointment within 72 hours of arrival, as our health policy recommends.
Your 8 Week Old Boston Terrier: The First Days
Young puppies sleep a lot, often 18 to 20 hours a day, so expect short bursts of play followed by long naps. Keep the first few days calm, stick to a routine and let your puppy explore one or two rooms before the whole house. Our puppies are raised in a busy family home, already used to children, other pets and noises like the vacuum cleaner, which makes the move easier.
House Training a Boston Terrier Puppy
- Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after every meal, nap and play session, and last thing at night.
- Use the same spot and a cue word, and praise or treat the moment they go.
- As a rough guide, a puppy can hold it for about one hour per month of age (plus one), so a 2-month-old needs a trip out every 2 to 3 hours.
- Clean accidents with an enzyme cleaner and never punish. Just take them out more often.
Crate Training
Dogs naturally avoid soiling their den, which makes a crate one of the best house-training tools. Make it cozy, feed meals in it, and start with short stays while you're home. Never use the crate as punishment, and keep daytime stays short for young puppies.
Socializing Your Puppy
The weeks up to about 16 weeks old are a key window for socialization. Gently introduce your puppy to new people, sounds, surfaces, car rides and calm, vaccinated dogs. Short, positive experiences build a confident adult Boston. Learn more about the breed's personality in our temperament guide.
Vaccines and Vet Visits
Puppies need a series of core vaccines every few weeks until about 16 weeks old, plus a rabies vaccine at the age set by your state. Bring the veterinary and vaccination records you receive at handover so your vet can plan the rest of the schedule. Our puppies aren't spayed or neutered, so ask your vet about timing.
